Maya Parbhoe was born into a family of famous entrepreneurs in Suriname, and her life has been significantly influenced by their history. Her grandpa founded the largest department store in the nation and her father, Winod Parbhoe, carried on the family’s entrepreneurial energy with new businesses in aquaculture, wood processing, and aviation, as well as other fields. Sadly, Maya’s father was killed in 2001 when she was just 13 years old after revealing notable financial missteps at De Surinaamsche Bank. Maya was permanently changed by this occurrence; it made her deeply committed to justice and disgusted by corruption. Maya herself is a serial entrepreneur, founding an import company when she was only 15. Starting with only a few dollars in savings, reinvesting profits and working long hours, she had enough success to launch her second venture which grew into a multi-million USD company. Now a seasoned entrepreneur, today Maya is taking on her most ambitious challenge – running for president of Suriname on a pro-Bitcoin platform. Making Bitcoin the national currency is a key part of her bold solution to fight systemic corruption and build an economy that works for everyone.
